About my work
If the definition of still life is a system of objects, then I think that I have always been doing still lives. As long as I have been doing art, I have been arranging things in a system of objects, and my work has consisted of putting together more than one item.
In my study of still life I have emphasised the independent value of this art form, both in the history of art and in my own work. The particular importance of still life, in my view, lies in its representation of the "overlooked" objects of everyday life, and in the artist's interpretation of his immediate environment.
I think that it is important to recognise the fact that artists have been doing still lives for more than two thousand years, and what seemed to be a dying genre, worthy only of hobby painters, has been shown to be very much alive. Still life will be with us as long as people drink from a jug, eat from a plate, and prepare food in a bowl or a pot.
